History

The Dogwood City Grotto was formed in 1963. Then, as now, we are dedicated to the preservation of Georgia’s caves. Of course, that extends to our other neighboring states – but Georgia is our home. The DCG has been the starting point for many of the most prolific cave explorers of our time.

One of Atlanta’s distinctions includes being “The Dogwood City”, so it was incorporated into the name. The Phoenix is a traditional symbol of Atlanta since like the Phoenix, we rose from the ashes of the Battle of Atlanta. That became the symbol of the grotto. The original symbol was created by early grotto member Wallace Colley.
